one of de Shan's favourite children’s stories is Lewis Carroll’s 'Alice in Wonderland'. just as alice was curious about the white rabbit and his whereabouts, de Shan was curious about finding the perfect abstract. this was her first serious attempt at abstract work. here, she used asphalt in lieu of brown oil paint, which she found to be flat and lack-lustre.
