de Shan began painting with glazes on bisque-fired ceramics in 2002, as the result of her desire for a ‘really big cup’ for coffee. the teapots either portray friends of the artist’s or a geometric design.

when de Shan's half-finished, hand-painted 1983 300D Mercedes Benz died, this set of paintings came to fruition. through the darkness of her loss, de Shan created all of the imagery which centred on traffic signals and traffic signs (only showing the lights as red, indicating the inability to "go"), which branched out to the stencil art found on traffic signal boxes around oklahoma city as well as various signs and gateways, etc. these were done through manipulating polaroid photos and combining them with mixed media paintings underneath.

the blue orchid series is the follow on work from the 'chasing the white rabbit' series, with further exploration of the use of objects, textures, scrap metal and asphalt, and was also inspired by music, particularly that of cake and the white stripes.

the fashion whorse series

a combination of an exhibition of deShan's art in a fashionable horse-racing area of brisbane, and her upbringing on a quarter horse ranch, inspired this work. it is also a study of the varied perceptions of relationships between men and women and the fantasy of escape from various duty-bound lives. it all began with a discussion of a story with a girlfriend who had a long-term affair with a married man, and he was labelled the “stud” and she the “whore”.

de Shan’s most recent abstract paintings deal with exploring the nature of paint, asphalt, metal and texture application on wood panels. they beg for further exploration beneath the layers: within the paint strokes lie text in hand-written journal entries of a stream-of-consciousness nature; scratch marks by various tools and sharp objects; a glossy transparency in between opaque objects.

100 drawings in 100 days, 2011

In her second 100 Drawings in 100 Days, Australian born, American artist deShan, has set out to create a body of work within these parameters, and has chosen subject matter that is collectible, fantastical and individual.

The result will be an art show at the end of the 100 days, to be held at Laruche at 680 Ann Street, Fortitude Valley on the 8th December, 2011 from 7pm-8:40pm. All of the drawings will be matted and hung for silent auction, with a live auction of all the large drawings to begin at 8pm. Each piece has a reserve price of $100 for the small and $200 for the larger drawings. A percentage of the proceeds will be donated to Redkite, a charity providing support for children through cancer.

Whether you’re a collector, an art lover, or an artist, 100 Drawings in 100 Days will be one art show not to be missed! Each drawing is matted and only measures 280 x 355 mm (small) and 305 x 405 mm (large) and is ready to be framed with the frame of your choice.

the 100 drawings in 100 days series is a visual journal of thoughts and an exercise in discipline. at the end of the 100 days, there will be an exhibition at Watt, which is inside the Powerhouse, at New Farm. the drawings will be for sale for $100 each, and a percentage of the proceeds will be donated to Variety, a charity for children. there will be 100 minutes in which to make your selections and purchase your favorite drawings.
