the funk circus series

In my mind, there is a circus. Brightly colored tents and signs, ribbons of flags, spotlights, crazy costumes, and grungy if not dusty performers and characters who are just a little quirky, or slightly elongated and odd-looking. Odd, in the good sense of the word - where you can’t stop looking and you want to know more about the creature in front of your eyes...

I have called this series of artwork “Funk Circus” and have captured that ever-elusive sense of unusual by means of multiple thin layers of oil paint on top of very subtly hidden shapes or stripes that form a critical texture behind the main subject/character. The characters themselves look directly at the viewer through their tale-telling eyes and with their oddly-shaped faces and costumes.

Now I can look and stare longer without feeling as though I ought to look away.
