this series was painted as the result of de Shan's divorce along with the inspiration of a movie made about a famous mexican artist, Frida Kahlo, whose work involved numerous self-portraits. these paintings reflect de Shan's refusal in conforming to the old-fashioned standards of marriage, as well as a slightly rebellious nature.
